Jessica Holter is an author, a gifted public speaker, poet, and visual artist, best known for creating The Punany Project in 1995 after the suspicious death of Eric “Eazy‐E” Wright of AIDS complications. The then Hip Hop entertainment journalist released her first book, Punany: The Hip Hop Psalms, in 1998. Complete with erotic poetry, safer sex PSAs, sensual images, and a musical soundtrack produced by D'Wayne Wiggins (Tony! Toni! Tone'!), and Lev Berlak of the Grill Studios, the anthology got her a performance feature on HBO's Real Sex and subsequently Playboy TV, and Black Entertainment Television. With a team of dancers, poets, singers, and comedians, Holter brought the text to life on stage in erotic sketch and romantic comedy theater shows, that have been compared to Augusto Boal's Theater of the Oppressed by scholars. (See UEAT, Urban Erotic Activist Theater, Raquel Monroe, UCLA Ph.D. dissertation.) Holter's writing includes the recurring pimp-ho element. Clare Crofts' Queer Dance reflects on Holter's use of exotic dance in chapter 15. "The erotic dancer’s body creates space for women to pleasurably explore their gender identities and sexual fantasies. As a skilled laborer, Punany’s Pearl imbues the heretofore-imagined disempowered, objectified, erotic dancer with agency and challenges Black respectability politics." Best‐selling Author Zane published some of her most riveting poetic works in the book Verbal Penetration in 2007. Holter's novel, The Punany Experience, The War Between Tops and Bottoms was also released by Simon & Schuster in 2010, and an audiobook on Audible.
