I got tired of the same damn questions all the time: “Cade, you’re one of the greatest quarterbacks ever to play the game. You’ve already set so many records. What are you shooting for next?” That sort of thing. You know what I told ‘em? What they wanted to hear. Certainly not the truth. The truth was I just didn’t care anymore. The game had lost meaning for me. Life had lost meaning for me. I never thought much then about how a woman might play into those feelings. As a superstar quarterback, it wasn’t like I was lacking for beautiful women on my arm. One woman, Serena, was different. She wasn’t shallow like all my others, and when we spent a wonderful night together, it was like I could start giving a damn again about life. Then she walked out.
