After graduating from England’s Royal College of Music and Oxford University, Alison Bernhoft swapped Oxford’s 800 years of history for the modern-day chaos of Los Angeles and an MA at UCLA. Having ripped herself from family, friends and homeland in an act she now describes as wanton self-vandalism (a do-it-yourself Attila the Hun, perhaps), her bold declaration, “I’m definitely only staying for one year” slithered gently into “Perhaps only two ... ” That was thirty-five years ago. Had she stayed in England, she would almost certainly have missed out on the single most formative educational experience of her life: homeschooling. Alison’s particular passion lay in making complex intellectual ideas simple, and she utilized every ounce of creativity and problem-solving skills she possessed to teach her own six children, as well as others who found the Entropy-style mix of laughter and serious education irresistible. After a brief foray into the intoxicating world of public speaking, Alison’s desire to utilize her spiritual gift of exhortation to encourage other mothers to find joy and fulfillment teaching their own was curtailed by atypical Parkinson’s. The only voice she now has in the homeschooling community sounds through the pages of Entropy Academy and her blog. She very much hopes that her readers will be inspired to read their favorite chapters out loud—preferably with an English accent!
