Amelie knew for a long time that she didn't belong on Earth. When she is seventeen years old she jumps off the San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge, and ends back in Penatus, the world that created ours. There, she remembers that she was sent to Earth because of a crime she committed. In Penatus at the institution, inmates are sent to Earth where dreamcatchers treat them by creating dreams to help restore the inmates to a safer mindset. Amelie was meant to stay on Earth for 100 years, but the treatments didn't take well, and she entered Earth with a partial memory of her previous and true life. She has three days before her final trial where the Empire will decide to take away the years she has left or not - destroying her completely. Her friends, Frode and Kaitlyn, help her go into hiding, where Amelie herself will become a dreamcatcher to accumulate "temporary" life that is put into inmates while they are on Earth. Amelie takes the temporary life by getting young men to fall in love with her, but after she takes it, they themselves are destroyed. When Amelie herself falls in love with a human in the next book of the series, Amber, she has to make the decision to let herself live, or to let him. The sequel to the book, Fireflies, Amber tells the story of Amelie as a dream catcher. As a dream catcher, she works in Solon, a world outside of Earth to create dreams and situations for humans in order to make them think a certain way. Rather than creating their dreams, she decides to live on Earth. Amelie has lost her ability to live forever, after angering the Empire (the rulers of her world, which is actually the world that created Earth), and the only way for her to live is by killing young men to take their lives. However, she must make them fall in love before she kills them, because they have to offer their lives to her. She continues to do so for fifteen years, until she herself falls in love with one of her victims, Erik. For the first time, the tables turn and Amelie knows what it is to be in love. When an unexpected consequence falls over Amelie, she has to make the decision to either let herself live, or the man she loves.
