Annie Laurie Harris, born with cerebral palsy, is the oldest one of her ethnicity who lives independently. Medical prognosis crumble in her 6th decade as she advocates for those whose disabilities carry a social stigma, leaving their lives at great risk. Her relentless efforts have brought accessible restrooms to a 5 STAR Hotel and have changed treatment practices in well established medical offices and home based senior care agencies unfamiliar with cerebral palsy. Achieving her Master’s Degree at Penn State University in 1985, she worked as a counselor and advocate for the chemically dependent. In 1990,she was recruited by the pristigious World Institute of Disability to be the Assistant Director of the first HIV/Disability Project. She now uses her writing skills to work with legislatures and national organizations in the ongoing struggle for an acceptable quality of life for those who cannot speak for themselves.
