Professor Arnold Temu is one of Tanzania's most eminent historians. Born into a peasant family on the slopes of Kilimanjaro, he was educated at Makerere and various North AMerican universities. He eventually headed the Departments of History at the University of Dar es Salaam and Ahmadu Bello University in Nigeria. Among his many publications are A History of Tanzania (EAPH, 1969) and The British Protestant Missions in Kenya, 1873-1929 (Longmans, 1973).
