Lucius Asgren, fresco di Accademia, viene mandato per il suo primo incarico a Gardoue, uno sperduto paesino sulle Alpi francesi. L'ispettore non fa neanche in tempo ad ambientarsi che viene coinvolto in un'indagine per a bordo dell'Occident Express, che ogni primo giovedì del mese passa da Gardoue, è stato trovato un cadavere.
