On paper, the haunted house called Black Rock looks as if it has been invented by the world's most uninspired horror writer. The first few pages of a book manuscript that Sarah-Jane Dresden finds under her bed are full of tired old cliches, but the story itself is frightening. Very Frightening. For the doomed heroine of Black Rock seems to be Sarah-Jane herself...and whoever wrote the first twenty-four pages knows things about her that no one else knows. The author's name and address at the bottom of each manuscript page is surely a joke-Peter Perfect, of Black Rock, Tintagel-but when Sarah-Jane goes to investigate, she discovers, standing on an outcrop jutting into the turbulent Atlantic, Black Rock-and the house is exactly as she imagined it...
