This is a tribute to Jane Austen; after the events of her 'Emma', though the main protagonists might live happily ever after, Jane Fairfax Churchill has a less idyllic life and after her husband is murdered finds that she needs to help Bow Street Runner Caleb Armitage to track down her husband's killer and find out what was going on.

This book contains three novellas. 1/ Jane and the Scandal at Bow Street - in which the head of Bow Street, Sir Nathanial Conant, asks Jane Churchill and Caleb Armitage to investigate a crooked magistrate, which leads Jane into some danger! 2/ Jane and the Yorkshire Murder - asked to a house party when staying at Enscombe, Jane's host is murdered and she must find out who has done this to protect the innocent at no small risk to herself. 3/ Jane and the imperfect wedding - delivered of her posthumous child, Jane is able to marry Caleb Armitage, but their wedding day receives the interruption of a badly injured man whose lost memory may contain the key to a heinous crime in the planning.

This is the third book about Jane Fairfax, now Mrs Armitage. Jane receives a letter from an old school friend, who is the pensioner of wealthy man, who has the task of turning her patron's chosen bride into a lady. When the said patron is murdered, she turns to Jane and her Bow Street Runner husband, Caleb, in the hopes that they might discreetly find out who killed him. The disparate and friction-filled relationships of those at the house party, and some very interesting correspondence leaves no shortages of suspects.

This book comprises two 'Jane and the Vanishing Valet in which Jane and her family are invited to stay with Araminta's uncle for Christmas, only to have to discover why their host is struck down, and also what has happened to the new valet. 'Jane and the Unladylike Wife' in which a dinner party is given by a lady who is subsequently murdered, and Jane and Caleb must find out who has killed her and why, and who is the mysterious woman who called on her.

Jane and Caleb are hired to work outside London; by the rules of Bow Street ‘when a gentleman writes, the gentleman pays’. At stake is the whole livelihood of Sir Colin, a man from whose custody were stolen a number of jewels belonging to other people, and Lloyd’s of London won’t pay the insurance. The thief’s accomplices have been arrested but they refuse to talk, or reveal his identity, and Jane and Caleb must undertake a masquerade to take their place in Sir Colin’s household. Jane’s and Caleb’s primary task is to find the jewels. Their secondary task to uncover the thief, and lift suspicion from other members of Sir Colin’s family. The stakes are raised, however, when the fire-raising thief shows himself to be lethally ruthless…

Jane and Caleb have been settling into their home, Daisy Hall, in Essex. Their reputation for solving crimes and mysteries ensures that they will continue to have an interesting life. These continuing stories have them contending with arson, theft, fraud, attempted murder and even high treason. Jane and the Burning Question is a novella and the following short stories continue the tale of Jane and Caleb’s mystery solving, as a braided novel, whilst making friends in the area, spending time with their extended family, and increasing their household. This is the sixth book in the Jane, Bow Street Consultant series.

Caleb Armitage, the ‘gentleman Bow Street runner’, finds that being knighted is no picnic. The Prince of Wales requires Jane and Caleb to attend the start of the season; and when an old acquaintance turns up, it appears that the prince has an ulterior motive. He hopes that the intrepid pair will be able to elucidate the reasons for a number of supposedly accidental deaths. When Lady Lieven presents tickets to Almack’s, it appears that she also has an investigation she wishes Jane in particular to carry out. Add to that a sabotaged Draisine, or hobby horse, and Jane and Caleb find themselves very busy in a world of glittering leisure and pleasure.
