Bobby and her cousin Ellen go away to school. Bobby finds a riding school, which leads to major changes in her life.

After getting married Bobby and Guy are immersed in the work and problems of Bracken Stables. Guy is struggling to get back into fitness after breaking his back and Bobby’s mare Shelta is off work after having a foal. The purchase of two ex-racehorses proves a challenge and it seems that someone wants to put them out of business to free their land for property development. Bobby also has a more personal problem, Guy would like children, but can she come to terms with the idea of motherhood. It takes a number of events to help her to decide. Gillian Baxter is the author of a number of pony books including the ‘Bracken’ series and, for younger children, the ‘Pantomime Ponies’ books. She has two daughters, both of whom compete in most disciplines including eventing and dressage, and one grandson. She was for many years chairman of a riding club in Surrey, but she now lives in west Wales, where for some years she and her daughter ran a riding school and trekking centre, and she found little time to write. Now, having given up horses as a business, although still surrounded by her daughters' competition horses, she has started to write again, returning to the characters she left suspended in time and who are now once again back in action.

In this sequel to Love and Horses at Bracken Bobby and Guy have to become used to being parents to their lively six month old daughter, Rose, and things are made more challenging when head girl, Heath, is injured and leaves them short staffed. The gap of workers is filled by the arrival of London lad, Dean Adelbyo, and his noisy donkey, Moses. Guy’s ex-racehorse, The Dark Miller, takes an instant dislike to him, which leads to a variety of problems and causes Guy to have a bad fall eventing. Bobby is offered the ride on a difficult show jumping mare owned by well known show jumping owner, Hal Johnson, and finds herself involved in rivalry with his usual rider Keith Rhodes who once fancied her. Bobby’s cousin Ellen elopes with a singer, leaving her ‘Perfect Horse’, Minos, for Guy to ride, and for both Bobby and Guy a higher standard of competing looms. Bobby must decide whether she is prepared to cope with the pressures on her life and marriage that this would bring or whether to leave professional competing to Guy.

In this, the third in the new 'Bracken' series, Bobby and Guy are dismayed when Riding School Manager, Heath, goes away to give herself space to decide her future and Bobby finds herself taking over her job. Folly, Shelta’s son, is now four and proving to have a mind of his own and Shelta is in foal again. Guy must cope with a difficult client or risk losing his eventing sponsor. His best horse, The Dark Miller, is in trouble after an injury and Bobby has fears of her own to face if she is to try for something which Guy very much wants.

In this, the fourth in the new Bracken series, Bobby has the chance of a top showjumper to ride if she can overcome its post traumatic symptoms after a serious accident and Guy's eventing career is leading him to a more serious high level of competing. Can these ambitions prove possible to handle without damage to their personal lives and to the institution which is 'Bracken Stables'?
