Born in Port Arthur, TX, and raised mostly in New Orleans, I received my B.A. from the Univ. of Iowa and my M.F.A. from Washington University in St. Louis. 2015 Louisiana Artist of the Year, I have also received fellowships from the Louisiana Division of the Arts and the Surdna Foundation, and was the poetry winner in the 2002 Writers Exchange competition sponsored by Poets & Writers. My books include Habitations, Motion Studies, Butcher's Sugar, and Parasite Kingdom. Former creative writing teacher at the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts and founding chair of the creative writing program at Lusher Charter School, I am now an independent writer and teacher.
