The Celtic people of northwestern Spain, the Gallegos, are ironic, sensual, and-according to legend-intrinsically sad. To these qualities, the main character of this novel, named Breixo, adds luck. He has affairs with married women; their husbands know it but do nothing. Yet Breixo leads a barren life and begins to dream, to imagine a different life that becomes more real than the real life it is his lot to lead. Now, that cuckolding; was it real?
