ENGLISH DESCRIPTION Nobel Prize in Literature 2019 “For an influential work that with linguistic ingenuity has explored the periphery and the specificity of human experience . ” —The Nobel Prize Jury Peter Handke published An Ode to the Length of Time in 1986, the same year he published his novel Repetition, one to which this poem is clearly related to. Lyric and epic, descriptive and philosophical, this long poem explores length of time as something that, unlike the metaphysical notion of eternity, manifests itself as the sudden irruption of something that returns, dragging us through time and giving us a sense that in human life we have a powerful internal element that is also completely unknown. A melody to life’s brevity and constant movement, An Ode to the Length of Time is a masterpiece of its genre, now published in this extraordinary and classic Eustaquio Barjau translation.
