This is what 20-year-old Charmaine Mercader Lasar proved when she won the grand prize at the 65th Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature (Palanca Awards). Her first submission to the Palanca Awards, Toto O, was recognized under the Nobela category, a bi-annual category for novels written in Filipino. Wattpad, an online platform that allows users to publish their originally written works, is popular but at the same time notorious. Many netizens, especially teens, love browsing through Wattpad. Critics though have lambasted Wattpad for the low-quality work that it contains as anybody and everybody can get published on the platform. Ms. Lasar explained that this negative stereotype was what drove her to improve her craft. Gusto ko magsusulat ako tapos masasabi ng iba na hindi lahat ng galing sa Wattpad ay mababa yung quality (I wanted to write something so that people can say that not everything that comes out from Wattpad is of low quality), she said. Fueled by this goal, in a span of one month, Ms. Lasar wrote her 33,000-word novel. The story is about a young boy named Timothy John Olep or Toto who wants to leave the province he has grown up in. When a family problem comes up, Toto is moved to another province. Initially thinking this is a good thing, he eventually realizes that it was better back where he came from.
