People have told me that they are in the same place I was (and, in many ways, still am) – willing to have the conversations but often not knowing how to refute the obvious biases or challenge the ideas in any kind of way that makes them sound like they know what they are talking about. I am writing this book so that you have something with which to start your own conversations about racism. Hopefully, you can find several things in here that light you up, give you pause, or encourage you to find out more information. It is time to have the conversation. Cowboy Coffee is written as a memoir describing my personal journey with reconciliation. My perspective is interwoven with statistics, factual information and suggestions about how the things we understand about Canadian society can be interpreted in a variety of ways. I challenge the historically conventional way of looking at our history, the understandings of our relationships with Indigenous people and the contemporary issues that confront us both as a country and also on a very personal level for every Canadian for whom reconciliation is an action, not just an idea.
