È nato a Cremona nel 1964. Diplomatosi alla scuola alberghiera di San Pellegrino terme, ha svolto numerosi mestieri – dal cuoco al facchino al rappresentante – prima di cominciare l’attività di giornalista freelance per varie testate, tra cui il quotidiano il manifesto. Militante per anni del movimento dei centri sociali, con i quali ha collezionato botte e denunce sino al 1994, è stato tra gli autori di "Antologia Cyberpunk" (Shake edizioni), e nel 1996 ha pubblicato "Italia Overground" (Castelvecchi), saggio sull’Italia delle controculture. Nel 1999 ha esordito nella fiction con "Attenti al Gorilla" (Piccola Biblioteca Oscar), dove ha fatto la sua prima comparsa l’alter ego dello scrittore, ex leoncavallino che soffre di sdoppiamento della personalità, buttafuori sui generis, costretto dalle circostanze e da un personalissimo senso della giustizia a trasformarsi in detective senza licenza. A questo titolo hanno fatto seguito "La cura del Gorilla" (Einaudi Stile Libero Noir, 2001) e "Gorilla Blues" (Mondatori 2002). E' presente in varie antologie di noir italiano, tra cui "Italia odia" (Piccola Biblioteca 2001) e "Il giallo e l’impegno" (Micromega 2002). Ha scritto anche una decina di sceneggiature per fumetti e il romanzo per ragazzi "Ciak si indaga" (Disney 2003). I suoi libri sono stati pubblicati con successo in Francia e in Germania. Attualmente è il direttore editoriale dei Gialli Mondatori e della Colorado Noir.

Wu Ming (extended name: Wu Ming Foundation) is the collective pen name of four Italian writers: Roberto Bui, Giovanni Cattabriga, Federico Guglielmi and Riccardo Pedrini, respectively known as "Wu Ming 1", "Wu Ming 2", "Wu Ming 4" and "Wu Ming 5". Gianrico Carofiglio (born 1961) is a novelist and former anti-Mafia judge in the Italian city of Bari. His debut novel, Involuntary Witness, was published in 2002 and translated into English in 2005 by Patrick Creagh and published by the Bitter Lemon Press, and has been adapted as the basis for a popular television series in Italy. The subsequent novels were translated by Howard Curtis. Carofiglio won the 2005 Premio Bancarella award for his novel "Il passato è una terra straniera". He is also Honorary President of The Edinburgh Gadda Prize which celebrates the work of Carlo Emilio Gadda. The Past is a Foreign Country is the English language title of the 2004 novel Il passato è una terra straniera. It won the 2005 Premio Bancarella literary award. It has been translated into English.

Nato a Viareggio nel 1965, dopo il liceo classico Giosuè Carducci di Viareggio, inizia a scrivere racconti e sceneggiature. Il suo racconto Viaggiatori nella tempesta è vincitore nel 1995 del premio Lovecraft. Il buio sotto la candela vince il premio Nino Savarese, mentre Direttissimi altrove e Tutto o Nulla (2001) sono arrivati in finale al premio Scerbanenco. Rosa Elettrica è stato fra i romanzi finalisti del Premio Fedeli.È fra gli autori italiani pubblicati in Francia nella "Série Noire" di Gallimard. È presente in alcune antologie come “History & Mistery" (Piemme), "Il ritorno del Duca" (Garzanti) e “Crimini italiani” (Einaudi). Dal suo racconto “Luce del Nord” ha scritto, insieme allo sceneggiatore Vittorino Testa, il tv movie omonimo, girato da Stefano Sollima. Ha collaborato come soggettista e sceneggiatore alla serie tv RIS (quinta stagione), e alle tre stagioni di RIS Roma. Collabora con i quotidiano "Il Tirreno", "La Repubblica" e con il sito “Giudizio Universale". È stato consulente tecnico del Premio Camaiore di Letteratura Gialla dal 2003 al 2013. Nel 2010 ha ricevuto a Maniago il Premio alla carriera Lama e Trama. Nel giugno 2012 è uscito per E/O il romanzo "La notte alle mie spalle" (Premio Pea 2013, menzione speciale Premio Gelmi di Caporiacco 2013). Nel maggio del 2015 è uscito per Sellerio il suo romanzo "Cosa resta di noi". Nel dicembre 2015 vince il "Premio Scerbanenco – La Stampa" con Cosa Resta di noi (Sellerio), assegnato al Noir In Festival di Courmayeur

He is an Italian mystery writer and playwright. He worked also a theatre impresario, actor and playwright. As a writer, his most famous character is Sarti Antonio[1] (surname written first), a Bolognese police detective, characterized by a strong morality but mediocre investigative capabilities; in his tales he is often helped by the sharper mind of Rosas, a smart university student. Sarti's stories have been turned into a television series in 1991, followed by an Italian-German co-production of six films, broadcast in April and May 1994. He was also the protagonist of a comics series published in the Italian magazine Orient Express. More recently, Macchiavelli has written a series of detective novels in collaboration with singer-songwriter Francesco Guccini having a Carabinieri maresciallo, Benedetto Santovito, as the protagonist. Machiavelli's books have been published in France, Germany, Portugal, Spain, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Soviet Union, Japan, Romania and other countries.
