The daughter of a doctor, who has risen above his farming background, and an English former governess, Catherine moves uneasily between the chapel-going Joneses and the local gentry wives. Despite her mother’s fervent desire for her to enter the upper echelons of society, when her cousin William falls in love with her she looks destined to remain in the farming community.
