Die unter dem Titel "Das obszöne Werk" (deutsch erstmalig 1972 bei Rowohlt) zusammengefaßten Erzählungen Batailles apostrophierte Susan Sontag als "Kammermusik der pornographischen Literatur". Für die neuere intensive französische Rezeption Batailles - für Roland Barthes, Michel Foucault, Pierre Klosowski oder Philippe Sollers - gehen seine erotischen Schriften bei weitem nicht in diesem Genre auf. Bataille faßt die Wahrheit der Erotik tragisch: im bewußten Gegensatz sowohl zur gesellschaftlichen Verdammung wie zur hygienischen Sterilisierung der Sexualität identifiziert er sie mit dem Schrecken, dem Entsetzen, dem Tod.
