
Deborah J Chavez, Ph.D., is the author of nine novels in the Harley Fremont Series. The books touch on pieces of Deborah's life: her love of dogs, her love of camping and travel, her love of nature and science, and her knowledge of the Forest Service. In the series, Harley travels in her motorhome with her dog, Gemma, to various national forest across the country. In the first novel, Virginia Rising, they travel to the George Washington/Jefferson National Forests to resolve crimes committed by two white supremacist groups. The second novel, California Juncture, takes place in the San Bernardino National Forest in Southern California. Harley and Gemma track a serial killer who is skilled at leaving false clues. Their third adventure, Oregon Unrest, took them to the Willamette National Forest in Oregon to track a kidnapper, who turned out to be much more than that. The fourth adventure, Colorado Searing, took them to the Arapaho/Roosevelt National Forests in Colorado in search of two missing Forest Service employees, one of whom may have committed a series of offenses against the agency and women. The fifth novel in the series, Montana Bedeviled, has the team on the hunt in the Custer/Gallatin National Forests for a satanic cult thought to be responsible for abducting and then murdering young girls. In novel six, Arizona Kaleidoscope, Harley and Gemma work to resolve a series of murders in the Coronado National Forest while challenged with a complex trail system, monsoon rains, and a Forest Service law enforcement officer who doesn't play well with others. The seventh novel is Idaho Goblins. In this book, Harley and Gemma arrive in the Salmon/Challis National Forest in Idaho to search for a lost trail hiker. Mining disasters, murder, and chaos ensue. In novel eight, Pennsylvania Anomie, Harley and Gemma travel to "Be A Man Camp" in the Allegheny National Forest to locate two missing campers. Most people think the men were lost along the trail system. The truth is not as simple. The final novel of the series, Alaska Outlier, is an adventure to the Tongass National Forest that begins as a celebration, then devolves into something darker. Harley discovers that the task is harder when the stakes are higher. The tenth novel, Duke's Last Daughter, is a stand-alone story about a successful middle-aged woman who returns home to assist with her father's Celebration of Life. She discovers the truths of her family that had been hidden from her, the youngest of four daughters. Some of the truths seem a bit trivial to her, others shake her to her core. Novel eleven begins the Gemma's Ranch Series. Book 1, Gift of Spots, reintroduces Harley Fremont and Gemma. Though Harley has left her law enforcement contract work behind, adventures and surprises follow her and Gemma to their new home. Harley, her fiancé, Bill Harris, and Gemma endeavor to create their home together, snuggled between the Santa Ynez Mountains and the Pacific Ocean in Santa Barbara. Just as it appears life is settling into a steady pace, they have adventures on trails, fires in unexpected places, a dog in trouble, another dog in trouble, and friends who are struggling. Harley and Bill work to maintain an even keel, even with the added pressure of starting a new business, including getting permits and inspections, hiring employees, and making decisions about services and advertising. The Gift of Spots is a story of joy, dreams coming to fruition, and gifts arriving from unexpected places.
