Eva Montmartre is an innovative research doctor working to bring a medical device to market that could change the future of medicine. Her success would mean improved health for millions of people and taking billions of dollars in revenue from the pharmaceutical industry. Ominous events force Eva to the realization that corporate espionage could destroy her life’s work during the crucial FDA approval phase, so she enlists the aid of FBI Agent Peter Fuente to protect her assets. While unknown dark forces press against Eva professionally, she's struck by the force of pull towards Peter, a charismatic military veteran and agent with who finds her strength a powerful attraction. Can Peter find the source of the threat in time? How will Eva and Peter navigate a relationship without compromising everything they’ve worked for? A thrilling story of power and contemporary romance, Devices, is a modern love story for those who stand in their own power rather than wait to be saved. Excerpt 1 [Thrills/Suspense] Eva had never been afraid of heights and this was no time to reconsider, but this move was going to be nearly impossible to do without hurting herself. She looked back in the house as it screamed myriad terrifying alerts at her. She was certain whomever was doing this to her would have disabled any automatic security calls from the alarm system. She was on her own. How long did she have before someone came for the bird in the cage? Excerpt 2 [Romance/Heat] Peter stretched his arm across the kitchen island, dropping his shoulder to counter height to reach as far across to Eva as he could. She hesitated, dropped her hands to her side in defeat, then took his hand. It felt strong and familiar in hers, sending a jolt of electricity up her arm and through her stomach. He led her by the hand around the island and drew her into him, depositing her hand against his chest as he put his arms around her. Eva stood between his legs on the stool, her forehead against his neck. She inhaled him and drifted on his scent back to the place twenty feet behind her where they’d spun on a wall and floor together, unable and unwilling to stop themselves. They stood holding each other without a word and Eva felt her heart rate slow and her breathing settle. For Peter, this was mission accomplished. While he was glad she was the kind of woman who fought rather than fled, she’d been through a trauma and he wanted her to be able to rest peacefully and soon. While Eva’s pulse slowed, Peter’s picked up a bit, having Eva so close after what felt like a year since the last time. Excerpt 3 [Humor] "Should have stopped on the way," Eva said under her breath as she stood in front of the refrigerator holding both doors open to an empty void of outdated food and barren shelves with baking soda boxes. "I now remember my last grocery run was three weeks ago. At least." Eva moved to the cupboards. Peter cleared his throat to draw her attention and showed off his sandwich roll like Vanna White. Then he turned and threw it over his shoulder in a GQ photograph-worthy stance. She giggled but was sheepish about taking part of his lunch away from him and tried to eschew the offer. He dramatically threw open the sticker on the sandwich paper and peeled back a corner while humming strip tease music. John focused on his work but couldn’t hide the amusement on his face. This only egged Peter on, now singing the strip-tease music full-throated as each fold was dramatically undone until the sandwich was exposed. Finally, Eva relented and accepted half of his sandwich, though she wondered what his act would include next and considered holding out for it.
