The Doctor Who Audio Annual

2018

For two decades, from the mid-1960s to the mid-1980s, every fan of the Doctor hoped to find The Doctor Who Annual in their Christmas stocking. Larger than life and twice as colourful, the stories within were exuberant—and often charmingly naive—in their take on ‘the children’s own programme which adults adore’. Here, for the first time on audio, Peter Purves (Steven), Anneke Wills (Polly), Geoffrey Beevers (the Master), Matthew Waterhouse (Adric) and Nicola Bryant (Peri) read a selection of these colourful and energetic tales. In The Sons of Grekk, the First Doctor is held prisoner in a brutal, otherworldly society. The King of Golden Death finds that the Second Doctor, Polly and Ben have materialised inside an Ancient Egyptian pyramid. The Third Doctor, Jo and the Brigadier confront a familiar adversary in Dark Intruders, whilst in Conundrum the Fourth Doctor, Adric and K9 experience warped physics in the corridors of the TARDIS. FacingThe Penalty, a delirious Fifth Doctor finds old friends and adversaries ganging up on him, and the Sixth Doctor and Peri plunge into a dangerous period of British history in The Real Hereward. Also included are two vintage essays on the character of our favourite Time Lord: Who is Doctor Who? from 1966 and The Phoenix in the TARDIS from 1968. Take a nostalgic journey through time with these vintage Doctor Who tales. Duration: 2 hours 20 mins

Dead on Arrival & Other Stories: Doctor Who Audio Annual

2022

Katy Manning, Jon Culshaw and Tim Treloar read a dynamic trio of stories inspired by strips first published in Doctor Who Annual. In 'Dead on Arrival', Jo Grant finds out what it's like to be a ghost when she realises that no-one can see her. Even more alarmingly, the Doctor and the Brigadier appear to be mourning her death! Something has gone very wrong since her last trip in the TARDIS - but how can she tell the Doctor about it? In 'The Traitor', the Fourth Doctor and Sarah help rescue the survivors of a crashed spaceship, only to discover that they are scientists deliberately marooned on a distant planet. The people plead with the Doctor and Sarah for help - but what happens next is far from expected. In 'The Power', the Doctor and Leela are among those invited to the wedding of Princess Azula on the planet Shem. Yet barbarism still rules over a divided people, and the time travellers become embroiled in a bitter tussle for the secret of the mysterious Power. Adapted by Paul Magrs from strip stories first published in the Doctor Who Annuals of the 1970s, these stories are brought to life by three much-loved readers and some stirring sound design. Authors

Peter Purves
Author · 3 books

He first became well-known to television audiences in the mid-1960s as Steven Taylor in Doctor Who. After leaving Doctor Who, Purves became a regular presenter on the children's magazine programme, Blue Peter, and was one of the longest-serving, lasting from 1967 to 1978. For much of that time, he co-presented with John Noakes and Valerie Singleton, and was so closely associated with the programme, especially as the sensible one, that he found the image difficult to shake off afterwards. His subsequent career has mainly been as a presenter, frequently for major dog shows such as Crufts. He was also host of the long-running BBC TV motorbike trials series Kick Start. He has also made cameo appearances as himself in episodes of programmes such as the soap opera EastEnders and the hugely popular sitcom The Office. Purves now lives in the Suffolk village of Sibton.
