Edward Kay is an award-winning author and screenwriter with an eclectic background in both live-action and animated television, as well as fiction and print journalism. Edward was a senior staff writer and producer for Canada’s most popular political satire show, the International Emmy nominated This Hour Has 22 Minutes, during its four most successful seasons. His newest book, the acclaimed non-fiction title Indigenous Ingenuity, was co-authored with Saddle Lake Cree writer Deidre Havrelock and released in 2023. It explores the amazing but previously unsung STEM accomplishments of pre-contact Indigenous North Americans. Kirkus Reviews calls it "an ambitious, appealing, and accessible work," while the School Library Journal gave it a starred review as "a completely unique and important narrative not to be missed." Edward's first crime novel, At Rope’s End, features Dr. James Verraday, a cop-hating forensic psychologist who reluctantly teams up with rogue detective Constance Maclean to track down a serial killer before they can murder again. Publisher's Weekly gave it a thumbs up, writing that "Kay spins a good whodunit with a juicy bonus twist at the end," adding that this "intriguing mystery debut blends academia and law enforcement in what looks to be a promising marriage made in the name of crime." Edward also created the three-book "Gross Science" non-fiction series for children. The first book in the series, Stinky Science, is in production as a television series with Shaftesbury Films. He has written three previous novels, all for YA readers: the critically acclaimed sci-fi series STAR Academy and STAR Academy: Dark Secrets, as well as Sink and Destroy, a work of historical fiction about the epic Battle of the Atlantic during World War 2. Edward’s writing has garnered him numerous awards and nominations including three Canadian Screen Awards, three Canadian Comedy Awards, and two Japan Prize “Finalist” designations for best educational writing. Prior to becoming an author and screenwriter, Edward spent six years as a freelance journalist, covering a diverse range of subjects including crime, science, literature, the arts, architecture and business.
