Большинству читателей было вполне достаточно «внешней куклы», и меня как автора это в общем вполне устраивало. Однако, готовя серию к переизданию, я всю ее прочитал заново, припомнил закулисную механику каждого романа, каждой повести и новеллы. Почему был написан данный текст (а всякий раз у меня имелся некий личный мотив). Из какого сора что выросло. Какие прототипы скрываются за персонажами. Литературные и исторические аллюзии – очевидные и неочевидные. Шутки, которыми я сам себя развлекал. Да много всякого. И захотелось про всё это рассказать. В новом издании серии к каждому из пятнадцати томиков прибавилась глава «Расшифровка». Как только дополненное издание начало выходить, читатели стали требовать выпустить «расшифровки» одной книгой – потому что дома на полках уже стоят фандоринские книжки, не выкидывать же их. Так что эта книга – приложение к «Приключениям Эраста Фандорина».
