Enmarcada en un futuro post apocalíptico en que la Tierra ha sufrido una catástrofe conocida como el Segundo Impacto, cuenta la historia de un chico bastante depresivo y apático llamado Shinji Ikari. Este personaje se verá súbitamente envuelto en la guerra más importante que la humanidad alguna vez tuvo que enfrentar: la llegada de los Ángeles. Para enfrentarlos, la ONU crea NERV que será la encargada de mantener y manejar a los Evangelion, humanoides gigantes cubiertos de armaduras mecánicas, que constituyen la única línea de defensa posible contra este enemigo; los cuales solo pueden ser manejados por chicos que hayan nacido en la fecha de la catástrofe planetaria.
