Surgida no mesmo ano em que o Autor publicou o romance Angústia para o Jantar – mais tarde também adaptado ao teatro –, esta peça contribuiu para celebrizar Luís de Sttau Monteiro como dramaturgo, tendo sido bem recebida pela crítica do seu tempo. Baseada na tentativa frustrada de revolta liberal em 1817, supostamente encabeçada por Gomes Freire de Andrade, Felizmente Há Luar! recria em dois actos a sequência de acontecimentos históricos que em Outubro desse ano levou à prisão e ao enforcamento de Gomes Freire pelo regime de Beresford, com o apoio da Igreja, sublinhando um apelo épico (e ético) politicamente empenhado e legível à luz do que era Portugal nos anos 60. Chamando a atenção para a injustiça da repressão e das perseguições políticas, a peça – designada por "apoteose trágica" pelo Autor – esteve proibida até 1974 e foi pela primeira vez levada à cena apenas em 1978, no Teatro Nacional, numa encenação do próprio Sttau Monteiro. At the age of 10, he left to London, with his father, which was a portuguese ambasssador. He comes back in 1943 at the time his father was fired by Salazar. Sttau Monteiro got an advocate degree in Lisbon and only practiced his profession for a short amount of time. He leaves again to London, becaming a Formula 2 racer. He comes back to Portugal and be part on numerous publications, as Almanaque magazine or A mosca in Lisbon's Diary. In 1961 he published the play Felizmente há Luar! (engl: Finally there is Moonlight!), being distinguished with the Theater's price. The play was censured and prohibited by the fascist regime. Only in 1978, the above play was annouced in the Nacional Theater. 160 000 copies were sold. Sttau Monteiro was arrested by the fascist police (PIDE) in 1967 after the publishment of the plays A Guerra Santa (engl: The Holy War) and A Estátua (engl: The Statue), satires against the fascist regime and the colonial war. In 1971 he wrote the novel Agarra o Verão, Guida, Agarra o Verão (engl: Hold the Summer, Guida, Hold the Summer), which was adapted to tv through the soup opera Chuva de Areia (engl: Sand Rain) in 1982
