As an entrepreneur, public relations expert and mom, Jennifer R. Farmer has been there. For nearly 20 years she has been there. She has been the employee, the mentor, the boss, the co-worker and the guide learning and helping other women not just succeed but slay at work. But in her words, slaying is bigger than performing well. It is about being well. In her new book, “First and Only: A Black Woman’s Guide to Thriving at Work and in Life,” Jennifer offers frank leadership advice to help Black women chart their own course, navigate the dual landmines of sex and race and develop a life that surpasses their wildest expectations. Her book is a departure from the typical leadership books, as she directly addresses the racism and sexism that Black women experience at work and in life. She outlines these things to validate what Black women have said for decades – that their rise to leadership is littered with obstacles that are unique to Black women—and ensure that their experience is documented and affirmed.
