The Lean Methodology is an emerging science within the mining industry. Although many industries from manufacturing, banking, medical services, aerospace and military institutions have seen Lean deployments cascade through their facilities it is only in the past decade that Lean thinking has been introduction within mining companies across the world. From the small gold mine to the large iron ore mine, they have all started with some form of Lean deployment with varying levels of success. Chris Warner has spent the past twenty years studying, teaching and applying the principles, tools and techniques of the Lean methodology. Most of these years were spent in the automotive industry studying the art of the Toyota Production System (TPS). For the past eight years he has been helping pioneer the integration of Lean within the mining industry. As a Principal Advisor on Lean Mining he has flown in excess of eight hundred thousand kilometers, traversing between many different mining operations stretched across the northwestern landscapes of Australia. His experience and knowledge has spread across multiple mining, rail and port facilities. In addition he has spent more than a thousand training hours coaching senior leadership teams and operational employees on the merits of the methodology. Chris has been inspired to put pen to paper to share his experiences and challenges while working in the bush. The narratives in the book are meant to stimulate thinking. There are duplicated themes across various stories; this has been done deliberately to help embed key principles. The mining industry is truly the last frontier for the deployment of Lean and it’s with great excitement that the book is published.
