The first dogs in my life were Blackie and Brownie. As a toddler on my grandparent’s farm, I remember drinking out of the outdoor faucet as it was filling Blackie and Brownie’s water bowl. They were collies that lived on the farm along with the cows, chickens, and barnyard cats. But I did not stay on my grandparent’s farm after my father came home from the war and our family didn’t have a dog as I was growing up. It was not until my daughter was in college that I got a dog. That dog was Oscar, a bichon fries/poodle mix. I saw and adopted him from a no-kill shelter when I went to visit my daughter. Since then, there have been other dogs in my life. They include Micky, Dooley, and Molly, all whippets; Chrissy and Trixie, Airedales; most recently, Truman and Wyatt, both rescue dogs. Truman and Wyatt are the subjects of my memoir. After I adopted Truman and Wyatt, I decided to tell about their exploits during our merging into a family. I decided to use the texts my two grown children and I sent to each other to tell the story. Truman entered my life at the end of 2018 and Wyatt less than a year and a half later. But because Wyatt became part of our family in 2020, texts about him and Truman were interspersed with texts about events at that time. As a result, the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic as experienced by us was recorded.
