Frenchmans Cap – one of the world’s great wilderness destinations – comes vividly to life in this collection of stories which define the mountain’s journey from its geological genesis through colonial times to the modern era. Along the way, a colourful procession of personalities join escaping convicts and bushrangers, explorers and gold fossickers, miners and piners. More recently, this towering quartzite peak has increasingly attracted photographers, rock climbers and bushwalkers. It has been a journey often accompanied by struggle and controversy, as protesters and nature lovers from all over the world fought to preserve this unique wilderness for future generations. A well known feature to the Tasmanian Aboriginal people, Frenchmans Cap continues to both challenge and inspire today.
