Teaching Psalms Vol. 2

From Text to Message

2018

The Psalms can be sung, spoken or read - but they were written to be prayed. Until we pray them from the heart we miss their purpose. The two volumes of Teaching Psalms aim to get the reader's heart engaging with this beautiful book of the Bible. If you love, or want to love, or think perhaps you ought to love the Psalms, these volumes are for you. Volume 1 acts as a handbook: \- How to pray the Psalms \- How to teach the Psalms \- The difficulties we face in the Psalms \- Integrating the Psalms into the Bible story Volume 2 picks up on the groundwork laid and begins with an overview of the structure of the Psalter. It then goes through the book of Psalms, giving an introduction to each one. It does not seek to compete with a commentary in that it does not approach each verse individually; however it offers what few commentaries attempt - a careful look at the message behind the book as a whole.

Teaching 1 Timothy

From text to message

2012

Timothy from Lystra was known as Paul the Apostle's 'son' and apprentice who was to learn the things of the faith from him. Timothy was later to be sent to Ephesus serving as Paul's representative. The Ephesians had lost their focus on the message of the gospel. They were materialistic and their lives were marked by ungodly living. Timothy's task was to call them back to the cross and what Jesus Christ had done for them, setting their sights on what they would receive when Christ returned for them. Until then they were to live lives of godliness and holiness. This book will help you to teach 1 Timothy, showing how we can navigate a godly life even in today's culture. This useful resource, alongside the others in this growing Teaching the Bible series, is for those who have the privilege and the joy of teaching or preaching a particular book or theme from the Bible. Whether you are a small group leader, preacher or a youth worker, it will help you to communicate the message from 1 Timothy. This book will provide a useful launching pad for Biblical exposition planning and executing a lesson or sermon in particular with background, structure, key points and application.

Teaching Amos book cover

Teaching Amos

From text to message

2006

The fundamental conviction underlying the series is that when the Bible is faithfully taught, God's voice is clearly heard. Few commentaries are written specifically with the preacher or Bible teacher in mind, and with the sermon or Bible talk as the point of reference. The preacher, the sermon or talk, and the listener are the 'key' drivers in this series. 'Teaching Amos' is written by Dr Bob Fyall, who has a particular passion for preaching and teaching the Old Testament. He is author of a number of books, including the Focus on the Bible volume on Daniel. Having first outlined a number of possible approaches to constructing a series of sermons or talks on Amos, Bob unlocks the text based on a suggested structure of nine sermons or talks. Individual chapters are specifically geared towards working from text to sermon, combining rigorous exposition with relevant application, always with an eye to the main teaching point of the passage. This volume will not only encourage better preaching on Amos, but serve as a timely reminder of the striking relevance of the prophet's message for today.

Teaching Matthew

Unlocking the Gospel of Matthew for the Bible Teacher

2003

Matthew’s Gospel is a substantial book to consider teaching through – its large sections of teaching and theological reflection seeming to predominate over the ‘action’ of the story. However, precisely because there are such rich seams of theology, and so much teaching from Jesus himself, it is a wonderful treasure–trove. It also excels as a way of explaining the message of the New Testament gospel emphasising a sense of its continuity with the whole Old Testament, and the fulfilment of God’s covenant promises in Jesus Christ. This is not an exhaustive exposition of the Gospel. The major focus is on Matthew’s five great teaching sections. It is not intended to take the place of commentaries but complement them, as few commentaries seem to be written with the sermon (or Bible exposition) as the point of reference that is being worked towards. As we work through Matthew’s Gospel, then, the aim is to help the Bible teacher find a way into the text that will enable him to use it for its given to be proclaimed as the living word of God. That is the point of Scripture, what it is meant for.

Teaching 1 Peter

Unlocking the book of 1 Peter for the Bible Teacher

2008

There are commentaries, and there are books on preaching - but very few books that combine elements of both to enable the preacher or Bible teacher to prepare and present a series on specific sections of Scripture. This series gives the Bible teacher suitable tools to understand the context of Biblical books; doctrinal themes; the methods of interpretation; the key teaching points and how to deliver that message to the audience. Whilst very useful for preachers, this book is also aimed at enabling youth workers and small group study leaders have the confidence they need to teach Biblical principles and doctrine. Teaching 1 Peter looks at the first letter from the Apostle Peter to a primarily Gentile audience scattered around Asia Minor. Angus enables the leader to explain the context of this letter and its relevance to a contemporary setting where Gentile Christians were surrounded by a pagan culture. He also enables the leader to apply practical theology to specific situations that still affect the church today. This is the latest addition to the Teaching the Bible series.

Teaching the Christian Hope

Unlocking Biblical Eschatology for the Bible Teacher

2004

What does the future hold? The world is lacking in any real hope. Our culture is characterised by blind people hurtling headlong into hedonism - making sure that all the right boxes of experience are ticked before we die. What can the church offer? This is a book for Bible teachers and readers about what are often regarded as controversial and difficult areas of Scripture; it sets out to enable us to teach with clarity and purpose what will happen in the 'End Times'. There are six major themes connected with the Christian hope in the future. Each chapter uses one or two key passages that explain one of the major themes of eschatology and then covers the main elements that need to be answered within that theme. The hallmark of this series of books is that each one teaches the truth of God's Scriptures and also offers real help for those involved in teaching the material to others. Each chapter is clearly divided into 'teachable' sections with headings and sub-headings. These aid the reader to recognise the teaching flow of the doctrinal elements under discussion. Do you want to know the future? Here's how it can be faced with hope.
