Excerpt from Grete Minde This edition of Greta M inde has been prepared with a twofold purpose. There is a real demand among teachers of German for stories which are comparatively simple in style but which at the same time are char acterized by depth and power. It is thought that Greta M inde is such a narrative. F outane is one of the foremost figures in the history of the modern German novel, and it is hoped that this edition may make his work better known in America. Among F ontane's stories Grate Mimic seemed both by nature of its con tents and because of its brevity to be best suited for readers in American colleges. The text is reproduced from the recent edition of Fontane's works issued by F outane and Company in Berlin, vol. Ii, pp. 32 5 Â 444. A few misprints in this edition have been corrected.
