Gérard d'Houville was the pen-name of Marie de Régnier, a French novelist and poet who was closely involved in the artistic circles of early twentieth-century Paris. Born the second of three daughters to Cuban-born French poet José-Maria de Heredia, she married poet Henri de Régnier, but also had a long-term relationship with Pierre Louÿs. She also took several other lovers, including Edmond Jaloux, Jean-Louis Vaudoyer, Gabriele D'Annunzio, and Henri Bernstein. Her poetry and novels were widely acclaimed by critics and the public during her lifetime, and she remains the only woman to have been awarded the top prizes for both fiction and poetry by the Académie française.
