In het legendarische Ten oorlog zette Tom Lanoye acht koningsdrama’s van Shakespeare naar zijn hand. In Hamlet versus Hamlet maakt hij een even gedurfde en ingrijpende bewerking van ‘het stuk der stukken’. Hamlet wordt algemeen gezien als het eerste moderne theaterpersonage – hij dubt meer dan hij handelt. Als ‘halfwas’ voelt Hamlet zich bovendien verpletterd door de wereld van de volwassenen. Zo ontstaat een personage dat weifelt tussen zelfhaat en zelfoverschatting, tussen minachting voor zijn zwakke zelf en minachting voor de onzuivere wereld. In het nastreven van zijn ambities en in het bestrijden van zijn angsten komt hij, tijdens een onverwachte en krachtig nieuwe eindscène, letterlijk oog in oog te staan met zichzelf: Hamlet versus Hamlet.
