In 1944 the Allied air offensive had gradually destroyed all enemy rail centres south of Florence and had delivered an all-out assault on the Gustav Line taking Monte Cassino thereby linking with American forces from Anzio. A long battle followed which carried the men of the Eighth Army through Italy to their contact with Yugoslavian guerillas at Monfalcone. Their determination to continue and never yield to the stubborn Germans is legendary and this is their story.
