The narrator has always been in the shadow of his older, more successful and well-liked brother. When a mysterious creature begins terrorizing their village and killing its livestock, the two volunteer to venture out into the woods and kill it. The beast is slain, but only the younger brother comes back. A week later the narrator's brother walks out of the woods. But how can it be his brother, when his brother is dead? He should know.
