Bruce Banner è un fisico nucleare che lavora alla realizzazione di una bomba gamma per conto dell'esercito statunitense guidato dal generale Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross. Durante un esperimento, prima che la bomba venga fatta esplodere, un giovane scavezzacollo di nome Rick Jones per scommessa si introduce nel perimetro militare. Lo scienziato si precipita sul ragazzo, chiedendo al collega di sospendere l'esperimento, ma l'uomo che si rivela una spia rossa, non ferma il conto alla rovescia. Bruce Banner riesce a salvare il ragazzo ma viene investito in pieno dai raggi gamma prodotti dall'esplosione. Bruce nonostante la violenza delle radiazioni riesce a sopravvivere ma dopo il tramonto si trasforma in un gigante dalla pelle grigia e dalla forza sovrumana, nasce l'incredibile Hulk. Rick Jones che ha assistito alla trasformazione, per riconoscenza verso lo scienziato che lo ha salvato, decide di seguire il gigante non rivelando l'identità al generale Ross, a sua figlia Betty e alle forze militari che, da questo momento, iniziano a braccarlo. He subsequently led the expansion of Marvel Comics from a small division of a publishing house to a large multimedia corporation.
