Dès les années 1880, Friedrich Nietzsche projette un ouvrage qui exposerait sa philosophie, mais il l'abandonne en 1888. Juste après sa mort, sa sœur Élisabeth établit le texte à partir de fragments, selon le plan laissé par l’auteur en mars 1887 : ainsi est publié La Volonté de puissance. Essai de transmutation de toutes les valeurs, considéré un temps comme majeur, notamment par Heidegger et Deleuze, puis tenu pour un montage falsificateur. Le Nihilisme européen forme la première partie des quatre livres annoncés : ce sont 86 fragments qui dressent un bilan de la situation philosophique de l’Occident moderne à la fin du XIXe siècle, caractérisé par le nihilisme d’une société malade, épuisée, décadente, « où le faible se nuit à lui-même ». Nietzsche analyse l’essence du nihilisme comme une dévalorisation de la vie et de l’existence. Il y voit trois responsables (le christianisme, l’esprit rationnel et critique) et leur donne un nom (entre autres : Kant, Rousseau, Schopenhauer, Wagner). Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche (Ph.D., Philology, Leipzig University, 1869) was a German philosopher of the late 19th century who challenged the foundations of Christianity and traditional morality. He was interested in the enhancement of individual and cultural health, and believed in life, creativity, power, and the realities of the world we live in, rather than those situated in a world beyond. Central to his philosophy is the idea of “life-affirmation,” which involves a questioning of all doctrines that drain life's expansive energies, however socially prevalent those views might be.
