British paperback edition. First novel by the author of "The Prestige." A tale of a future world where the Amazon forests have been cleared, the population has been decimated by a major war, and where the air itself contains deadly, mind-distorting compounds. "A first novel, remarkably well calculated and controlled. The whole story is put over crisply, with a nice sense of the odd, so that one goes willingly to the end." - Times Literary Supplement.
