A precocious reader as a child, at the age of 12 I happened upon the iconic I Cannot Forgive by Rudolf Vrba, thus beginning a lifelong obsession with the Holocaust. For reasons that elude me today, though, I never thought of writing about it. A wanderer for much of my adulthood, I've lived in a lot of places, many of them exotic, where I combined the education only travel can give with that of the written word to produce a variety of published short stories and articles. Upon revisiting a remarkable piece of history I'd all but forgotten, however, and finding to my surprise it still lacked the book it deserved, I decided to write that book. The result is The Trumpets of Jericho: A Novel, the first ever to tackle the defiant 1944 Jewish revolt at the huge Auschwitz extermination complex, and the just as inspiring account of the four young female rebels arrested and savagely tortured by the Gestapo during the investigation that followed. I live at present just east of Austin, Texas, a magnet of a city for the freethinking young, or in my case, the young at heart. "Keep Austin Weird" is both its motto and mission. Mine and my book's is to show what is possible when men and women refuse, against all odds, to simply curl up and die when confronted by those who wouldn't only rob them of their lives but all dignity. "As moving as Schindler's List, horrific as Son of Saul, heroic as The Grey Zone... Trumpets is an adventure destined itself for the silver screen." —-Raja-Rao Literary Endowment
