Jean-Olivier Héron was a French illustrator, writer, and publisher known for his major role in youth publishing and illustrated books. Raised in a family with strong maritime and publishing ties, he studied at the École des métiers d’art in Paris before beginning a career in illustration. In 1971, he co-created the sailing magazine Voiles et Voiliers with Pierre Marchand, contributing detailed illustrated series on shipbuilding. In 1972, he co-founded Gallimard Jeunesse, helping develop influential collections such as Folio Junior and Gallimard Découvertes, while also illustrating numerous covers and titles. He later authored books for children and adults and founded Gulf Stream Éditeur, reflecting his continued interest in nature, design, and ecological themes.
