Historian and award-winning educator, Jet Thomas, Ed.S., is a retired educator whose lifelong passion for American history and political government has shaped his career in education and his debut as an author. With over 25 years of experience teaching and leading in high schools, Jet devoted his career to inspiring students to understand the civic responsibilities that uphold democracy. He holds an Education Specialist (Ed.S.) degree from Missouri Baptist University, which complements his deep commitment to equity and civic engagement. Jet began his career teaching Social Studies, focusing on Civics, U.S. Government, and World History. His dedication to his students earned him Teacher of the Year honors and later led him into leadership as an Assistant Principal in St. Louis, Missouri, where he served for nearly two decades. During this time, he received accolades such as Assistant Principal of the Year and the Excellence in Education Award from the St. Louis American Foundation. A tireless advocate for equity in education, Jet co-led initiatives to foster inclusive, supportive environments for all students. In his debut book, Guardians of the Vote: History, Heroes, and the Legacy of Voting Rights—1960s v. Today, Jet draws on his extensive background in education and history to explore the ongoing struggle for voting rights in America. The book delves into the evolution of voting systems, the influence of pivotal civil rights milestones, and the challenges of modern voter suppression. Through compelling narratives and thoughtful analysis, Jet shines a light on the contributions of voting-rights heroes—past and present—while equipping readers with the knowledge to become guardians of democracy themselves. Praised by Kirkus Reviews as “an erudite and engrossing look at the perennial struggle to safeguard the cornerstone of democracy,” the book is enriched with vivid historical details, timelines, and inspiring personal stories. With a foreword by journalist and activist Tavis Smiley, it serves as both a history lesson and a call to action, empowering readers to embrace the power of their vote. A resident of Missouri, Jet remains deeply connected to his community and its rich history. When not writing or advocating for civic engagement, he enjoys spending time with his wife, their three Yorkshire Terriers, and their grown children, all of whom live nearby. Jet’s unwavering dedication to education, equity, and democracy continues to inspire new generations to engage with the history that shapes our nation.
