About the Role
This is a deeply strategic and unusually cross-functional role, ideal for someone who wants to help shape the trajectory of an early-stage product loved by readers.
You'll be the first business-side hire, working directly with the Founder & CEO Paul Warren. Your job is to help Margins grow — not just in terms of users, but as a cultural force.
That means figuring out how to grow our userbase, build awareness, and foster love for the product and the brand. It also means exploring the partnerships, content, storytelling, community, and operational systems that will unlock what's next for us.
This role blends brand, growth, partnerships, ops, and special projects. Some days that means crafting launch campaigns, others it's identifying influencer partnerships, running user experiments, or negotiating with a publisher. You'll help the company scale, both externally (audience, distribution) and internally (process, communication, and execution). You don't need to have done all of this before — but you do need to love breaking new ground and figuring it out.
What You'll Do
- Help us take over BookTok via UGC creators, influencer marketing, and more
- Lead scrappy initiatives to grow Margins' growth and engagement — from brand awareness to product activation and retention
- Stand up scrappy GTM experiments to drive growth and engagement
- Help shape and evolve the Margins brand and voice in the world: social, editorial, community, and product storytelling
- Identify, evaluate, and drive high-leverage partnerships (with publishers, booksellers, influencers, platforms, authors)
- Represent the reader perspective in go-to-market and product strategy conversations
- Build light-touch, scalable systems for marketing, support, community, and internal ops
- Serve as a true thought partner to the CEO — proactively identifying problems, proposing solutions, and helping the company operate at a higher level
Qualifications
- Track record of excellence in an entrepreneurial, high-agency role (can be from startups, media, creator, ops, or product worlds)
- Exceptionally clear thinker and communicator — someone who thrives on ambiguity and breaks down big challenges into doable plans
- Deep curiosity about people, culture, media, and storytelling
- Strong design and product instincts — you care about user experience and want to build something beautiful and lasting
- Are equal parts creative and analytical—comfortable running A/B tests and crafting compelling messaging
- Experience (or real enthusiasm) for engaging with online communities and creators
- Comfort with scrappy, fast-moving, 0→1 environments
- A love of books is key — and a love of helping people find the things they love is essential
- Bonus: If you've worked on mobile apps before
- Bonus: a technical background
