Los Angeles-born Judith Berlowitz received her PhD in Romance Languages and Literatures from UC, Berkeley. Her debut novel emerges from a long career as professor of Spanish (Mills College, Holy Names University, Stanford University). Once retired, her genealogical pursuits uncovered the Gestapo papers that introduced her to a distant and forgotten relative. Documents from Soviet Archives, Spain’s historical memory projects, and conflicting family stories inspired Judith to give Klara Philipsborn a voice. Judith has also worked as a tour guide and translator, once played oboe and classical guitar and she currently sings with the San Francisco Bach Choir. She is a devoted fan of jazz, flamenco, salsa, and Carciofi alla giudia. She lives with her husband, writer Cy Berlowitz in San Francisco, not far from her three daughters and three grandsons.
