At the end of the war, normal channels of civilian law were not efficiently re-activated to deal with relatively minor crimes. With enemy soldiers on the loose, the Yugoslavian police could not be bothered with a ""routine"" series of robberies that plagued the whole countryside. Instead, a group of young boys, several of whom had been victimized, band together as a company of sleuths. Their chief suspects are Isaac the recluse and Mario the poet, but a few attempts to prove them guilty end in futility. To the amazement of all, the boys discover a spy in their own group and eventually the identity of the real thieves. The nighttime escapades of this brave little group, the assortment of misleading clues and the surprise ending, hold interest as only the skillful mystery can.
