Leonard Martin is a Southern Iowa native. Got a Love’n Heart is his first novel. He spent his youth growing up on a farm southeast of Leon, near the Missouri border. Following graduation from Central Decatur Community Schools, he entered the U.S. Army. He then served at Torii Station in Okinawa, Japan. After the military, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in the Mathematical Sciences at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa. He spent the next thirty-two years teaching secondary mathematics with stops at Iowa schools in Tabor (Fremont-Mills), Melcher (Melcher-Dallas), and Afton (East Union). The longest stay was at the last school, East Union, where he taught for 26 years. “My classroom at EU overlooked the softball diamond. The school sits on slightly higher ground which allows for a good view in the distance. From my room, I could see hillside farmland; sometimes in row crops, other times in hay, and at other times being grazed by cattle and horses. With the blinds up, it was easy to daydream for student and teacher alike. To prevent the distraction, I kept the blinds mostly drawn, strategically adjusted to allow in light. That is, until the students were gone, then I could open them. I always felt like I had one of the best offices anywhere.” Along with teaching and math contests, Martin spent several years coaching, mostly in the early years when he coached wrestling. Later on, when asked, he coached a year of softball and helped with the athletic director duties for a year. He currently lives in Osceola, Iowa with his wife Jodi. He and Jodi did a stint broadcasting high school sports on radio. “We still try to go to high school and college events, plus we watch a lot on the tube.” His life is slower paced now. “I am not the most prolific writer around. I write a little more on some days than I do on others. Occasionally, I write quite a bit. It is a luxury of being retired.”
