In 1915 the futures of the Schoudler and La Monnerie families are joined with the marriage of François and Jacqueline. The children of this union will be called upon to shape France’s future; however, events seem to want to contradict the call of destiny. Old disagreements, confrontations between the families, ruthless fighting for money and power, and the tragedies that all these things provoke allow for ambitious people to occupy positions of privilege from which they were previously excluded.
