Martin Wheeler - alias John Lee, hardware salesman - walks into a Chicago police station and confesses to a six-year-old bank robbery. The story he tells amazes Detective Lieutenant Andrew Brooke and awakens an old personal vow. Brooke surreptitiously brings private investigator Frank Lydecker into the case and the two lifelong friends confront a maze of deception and murder in pursuit of a criminal mastermind.
