'Traveller Without Luggage contains some of Jean Anouilh's finest writing for the stage,' said Harold Hobson when the play was produced at the Arts Theatre in London recently. It is an early play, a pièce noire written in 1936, but it has that characteristically wry comedy and a series of theatrical stroke that mark its author's genius. The story is of Gaston who lost his memory in the 1914–18 war, and eighteen years later is beginning to uncover his past. The proofs accumulate and Gaston, the gentle, sensitive man, learns with increasing horror of the cruel and detestable person who was his former self.
