While many view corporations as the citadel of efficiency driven by the quest for profits and equity growth, this novel exposes the truth of organizational waste, inefficiency, internecine battles, and, most of all, a lack of empathy for a corporation’s employees, who are viewed as balance sheet liabilities instead of assets. This novel follows the plight of the Employee Communications Manager Mark Rossi from the Corporate Headquarters of the fictional Grove Logistics, where he is fired and escorted off the property after his 2022 annual employee review with vice-president Andrew Reeder. The novel begins in early January 2023 – after the disastrous review—with Rossi’s commute home in the typical Atlanta traffic gridlock. Rossi recalls his last year – 2022 – and the events at work that impacted his review score. Rossi recalls key events from the year, starting with the manager who demands Rossi send him a daily update of how many adjectives, nouns, verbs, etc., he writes for his boss’s speech. Then there’s the brutal warfare between departments in the same corporation, engendering a fictional employee to accept all blame that is foisted upon that department., and a brutal war over assigned tables in the Corporate cafeteria. Along the way, we meet the typical denizens of management – the older white male who constantly screams about cancel culture, the middle manager who’s been “quiet quitting” for years, and the managers whose get-ahead strategy includes brown-nosing and backstabbing. While the subject is serious, the tone is absurdist, sarcastic, and playful. After all, it’s a corporation. What’s not to chuckle at? Or get angry with? For 38 years, the author worked as a department manager in a Fortune 30 corporation and experienced the vagaries and nonsensical ways in which large corporations deal with their employees, privately subverting the corporate culture they publicly endorse, and battling among themselves with more virulence than that shown toward the competition.
