Little Strokes is the story of a town that disappeared. The political is made personal in this saga about five generations of the Wheat family, founders of Wheatville, a once thriving freedom colony in Austin, Texas. Beginning in 1867 and ending in 2024 this historical fiction explores the hardships that threatened to destroy a child separated from her mother during slavery, incarceration during reconstruction, addiction and police brutality in the twentieth century. Through it all the matriarchs manage not only to survive but make magic in their gardens, homes, churches and schools. They pass on to their children the secrets of healing through touch, food, music and the Word. The Wheat family may have been removed, their footprints effaced, but they lived, and this is their story.
